Alexis Podesta – Wiki Biography of the FBI’s Most Unlikely Informant

Alexis Podesta

Alexis Podesta is a prominent California Democratic operative whose career has spanned from Capitol Hill to top state government posts. She was born around 1980 or 1981; official press releases from the California Governor’s office note that she was 34 when appointed as a state undersecretary in June 2015 and 36 when promoted to cabinet secretary in February 2017. Podesta completed her undergraduate studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Journey from Washington to Sacramento

Podesta began her career in Washington, D.C., working for nearly a decade as Director of Scheduling for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (2002–2007). She then moved into corporate government relations: first as a Government Relations Manager at The Walt Disney Company (2007–2009), and later as a Special Assistant in Public Affairs and adviser to PG&E’s CEO (2009–2011). These roles gave Podesta experience navigating complex public policy issues and building networks in the Capitol (she even managed high-profile transitions in California’s shift to adult-use cannabis).

In 2011, Podesta returned to California to join Governor Jerry Brown’s administration. Over the next four years, she held multiple senior staff positions, including Director of External Affairs, Director of International Affairs, and Chief of Protocol. In these roles, she served as a liaison between the Governor and stakeholders and represented Brown on trade missions and diplomatic events. This period cemented Podesta’s reputation as a trusted aide to Brown – a young leader skilled at “skillfully navigat[ing] complex policy and political issues”.

Climbing the Brown Cabinet

Podesta’s big promotion came in 2017, when Gov. Brown nominated her as Secretary of the Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency (BCSHA). At age 36, she was confirmed by the Senate to run this $4.75 billion cabinet-level agency. In that capacity, she oversaw 12 departments and thousands of employees responsible for consumer protection, housing, and professional licensing. She also held the concurrent title of Secretary of California’s Homeless Coordinating and Financing Council.

Podesta led BCSHA through the end of the Brown Administration and into the first years of Gavin Newsom’s governorship, serving roughly five years as secretary. Under her tenure, the agency administered billions in housing loans and anti-homelessness programs. Business and labour groups noted her steady management style; at her 2017 confirmation hearing, union leaders testified in support of working with her. However, Podesta stayed out of the spotlight, choosing to let her work speak for itself.

Building the Podesta Company

In 2020, after leaving the cabinet, Alexis Podesta founded The Podesta Company, a Sacramento-based consulting firm. This small strategic advisory firm offered government affairs and regulatory consulting, capitalizing on her deep network of agency contacts. (Its website later listed clients including SCIF, the California Housing Finance Agency, and other state boards.)

Around the same time, Gov. Newsom named Podesta to the board of directors of the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF). This state-run workers’ compensation insurer handles $21 billion in assets and insures roughly 110,000 California employers. As a SCIF board member (appointed in 2020), Podesta continues to attend quarterly meetings and receives an annual stipend (about $70,000 in 2023). Her continued presence on SCIF’s board was notable even as a federal corruption probe unfolded (below).

Podesta also moved into the private sector. In March 2021, she joined the board of Body and Mind Inc., a Canadian cannabis company that works in U.S. markets with limited licenses. A press release lauded her as an experienced leader with a lot of management and cannabis knowledge, noting her role in managing California’s change from medical to adult-use cannabis.

Role as an Informant

In late 2025 and early 2026, Podesta became a national news story during a large federal investigation of California political figures. In November 2025, U.S. prosecutors revealed charges in a campaign-finance scheme involving former Gov. Newsom’s chief of staff, Dana Williamson, and others. Alexis Podesta’s lawyer later confirmed that she was the unnamed “Co-Conspirator #2” mentioned in court papers. Importantly, Podesta was not charged with any crime, and her lawyer said she is working with investigators.

News reports later revealed Podesta had been secretly recording conversations for the FBI as part of her cooperation. She was alleged to have helped handle payments to former Deputy AG Sean McCluskie through a dormant campaign account belonging to then-Attorney General Xavier Becerra. Counsel for Podesta asserts that their client had no prior knowledge of the alleged wrongdoing. Her cooperation has provided a key “missing piece” (recorded conversations) in the investigation.

Although these developments thrust Podesta into the headlines, most coverage has focused on the legal case rather than her personality. Major outlets describe her neutrally as a Sacramento lobbyist and political consultant. No one reports any ego or scandal beyond the facts of the probe. Even the typically combative Williamson was said to remark on Podesta’s cooperation; “Alexis wore a wire, and Dana did not,” quipped McGregor Scott, Williamson’s lawyer (via New York Post). In essence, Podesta’s involvement in the case seems to confirm her role as a behind-the-scenes player, not a headline-seeking figure.
