Tania Obst is a well-known figure in Australian netball, famous for leading the Adelaide Thunderbirds to back-to-back Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) championships. She is the daughter of the late Trevor Obst, a famous four-time premiership Australian rules football player for Port Adelaide. Her birthday is on July 5, and she was born in 1968. She turned 58 in July 2026. Hailing from South Australia, Obst was a top player at Garville and Contax before becoming a coach.
South Australian Roots and Early Courts
Tania Obst grew up in the lively netball scene of Adelaide, South Australia. She first became known as a player in local leagues. Obst played senior netball for the Garville and Contax clubs, helping them win many state league championships. By 1997, she was captain of the renamed ETSA Contax team. That year, Contax was a top team in the South Australian state league, and Obst was a key leader on the court.
After a solid playing career, Obst retired from competition in 1998 and immediately transitioned to coaching. She began by mentoring at Contax and taking charge of South Australia’s under-19 and under-21 state teams.
Climbing the Coaching Ranks in Adelaide
During the 2000s, Obst built an impressive coaching record in South Australian netball. She was the Head Coach of the Netball program at the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) for seven years. In that role, she trained young players and became known as a skilled teacher of the game. At the same time, Obst joined the Adelaide Thunderbirds’ staff. From 2012 to 2014, she worked as an assistant coach under head coach Jane Woodlands-Thompson, helping lead the Thunderbirds to the 2013 ANZ Championship title. In 2017, Obst was named head coach of Australia’s U21 team for the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana. The team included future stars like Hannah Petty and Matilda Garrett, and Obst led them in the international competition.
From Adelaide to England: International Stage
Looking for new challenges, Obst moved abroad in 2017. She joined England Netball as a Senior and Futures Coach. Over two seasons (2017–2019), she helped develop England’s national program. The highlight was the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, where Obst was part of the England coaching team during the team’s historic 56–51 win over Australia in the final. That win gave England the Commonwealth Gold Medal – the first time in netball history.
Concurrently, Obst returned to Australia for a stint with GIANTS Netball, the Sydney-based Super Netball franchise. She spent two years as an assistant coach with the GIANTS. In mid-2018, while still officially with England, she had been “the Giants assistant coach”.
Reviving the Thunderbirds
In July 2018, amid a decade-long decline for Adelaide’s team, Obst was announced as the new head coach of the Thunderbirds. The club had just suffered its 23rd straight loss and needed a rebuild. Returning to her home state, Obst vowed to revitalize local talent. She said she “could not wait to … explore and support the outstanding local talent that exists in South Australia”. Her vision was clear: build a strong roster with South Australian stars and international recruits alike.
The turnaround was dramatic. In Obst’s first season (2019), the Thunderbirds won only three games, but their success grew quickly. By 2023, Obst led the team to an exciting 60–59 win over the NSW Swifts in the Super Netball Grand Final. It was Adelaide’s first SSN championship and their first title of any kind since 2013. The next year, Obst did it again: the Thunderbirds won two SSN titles in a row, beating Melbourne Vixens 59–57 in the 2024 Grand Final. These wins ended a 10-year finals drought for the club. After the 2024 win, Obst was named Suncorp Super Netball Coach of the Year. Throughout this journey, Obst has been celebrated as a “South Australian local” and proud ambassador for her state. The CEO of Netball South Australia praised Obst for her passion for developing local talent, saying that under her leadership, the Thunderbirds have “rediscovered [themselves] as a powerhouse”. In August 2024, the Adelaide Thunderbirds extended Obst’s contract through 2027.
Beyond the Court
Off the court, Tania Obst is known for being humble and focused. In interviews, she highlights the importance of the team: “I love the strengths and uniqueness everyone brings to our team,” Obst said after winning her second title. She has shared pride in raising the profile of her home state, “I am so honoured to be a part of the Adelaide Thunderbirds and what we’ve achieved”, and excitement about the club’s future.
